A critical step to a successful local search marketing program is to create and manage numerous backlinks and citations for your website. Backlinks are defined as links on a website that point to a page on your website. Citations on the other hand are simply mentions, or a listing of your agency in a directory, including your name, address, and phone number among other things. Citations also include a link to your website in most cases but that is not always the case. Backlinks and Citations are at the foundation of Google’s algorithm that ranks websites and are very important if you are to show up in Google search for competitive searches such as those for insurance.
When creating citations, it is critical that your agency is represented accurately including your correct Name, Address, and Phone Number (NAP). To be clear, your NAP should be exactly the same in all citations and should match that which is found on your website. In addition to your NAP being accurate, it is important to complete your profile by including your website address, hours of operation, and proper categorization of your business. It is also important to have individual profile for each of your agency’s locations.
